Executive Takeaway
A PPI is a buyer-protection process. It should improve visibility around aircraft condition, records, upcoming maintenance, component exposure and technical findings before the buyer inherits the risk.
Scope Must Match the Aircraft
Inspection depth should reflect aircraft type, age, operating history, records quality, utilisation, upcoming inspections, engine/APU exposure, landing gear status, cabin condition, avionics configuration and buyer risk tolerance.
Records Before Arrival
Records review should begin before the aircraft reaches the inspection facility. Early review can highlight missing documents, maintenance exposure, repair-history questions and inspection areas requiring special attention.
Findings Need Commercial Interpretation
A long findings list is not useful unless it is interpreted. Buyers should separate cosmetic issues, operational findings, records gaps, airworthiness-sensitive concerns, negotiation items and post-closing planning items.
The Purchase Agreement Matters
Technical findings and contract language need to align. A finding may be important technically but only commercially actionable if the purchase agreement is drafted to address it. Buyers should obtain aviation legal advice where required.
Practical Checklist
Before inspection, confirm MRO, scope, records access, reporting format, discrepancy categories, who approves additional work, who pays for rectification, and how findings affect closing.
